Restaurants

There are many quality restaurants in Aruba. Many of them are members of the Aruba Gastronomic Association (AGA) where membership requires a high level of quality and service.

Details and Menus for Aruba's restaurants can be found in various publications available free in your hotel lobby. divider

Food markets

Coffee For those staying in time-shares or other places with kitchen facilities, there is a cluster of supermarkets just north of Oranjestad near the low-rise hotels. Most everything that you will need can be found in one or more of the markets with prices much less than the hotel mini-marts. There are fresh fruits, meat, cheese, eggs, and fresh milk (both regular and 2%) as well as a variety of frozen and packaged foods.
All the stores have some sort of an in-store bakery. All the markets have a selection of 'imported' foods from the USA with prices generally higher than for the Dutch foods. Wine, spirits and beer are available. They sell cosmetics and sunscreen for less than the hotel shops. The prices are in Florins but the registers will convert your total to US Dollars at the touch of a button. They will take your Mastercard/Visa with minimum purchase requirements at some stores.

Certified is a large market in a mall with some other shops.

Kong Hing is between Certified and Super Food.

Ling & Sons is now in their new building behind the other three markets.

Super Food is a smaller market with a good selection of products.

Places of Interest

Besides the more popular attractions such as the Natural Bridge, the rock piles at Ayo and Casibari, the Alto Vista Chapel, and the Lighthouse, there are some other places that may be of interest:

Bfly Bfly The Butterfly Farm located across from the Phoenix resort is a pleasant diversion from the normal Aruba activities. For one admission you can return as many times as you like during your stay in Aruba. There are many species of butterflys not ususally seen in the United States as well as a tour that explains the butterfly raising process. Go in the morning!

Ostrich Located on the road to the Natural Bridge, just before you get to the Bushiribana Gold Smelter Ruins, you will find the Aruba Ostrich Farm. The tour encompases the entire process of raising Ostriches. In addition, there is an African style Bar-Restaurant and a gift shop with African art objects.

Arikok Arikok The Arikok National Park provides an unspoiled view of Aruba landscape. There are walkways and signs identifying some of the more prominent flora. There is also a replica of an ancient Aruban farm.

To get there, take the road inland from the circle between Taco Bell & Pizza Hut towards Santa Cruz (highway 4). As you approach Santa Cruz make a left turn and follow the road to 'Parke Nacional Arikok'. The entrance to the park will be on the left beyond where the paving ends. After making the left turn, there is a small parking area on the right (the site of the future Visitors Center) where its probably the best place to park if you do not have a high ground clearance vehicle. There is a 600M trail from there to 'Cunucu Arikok'. If you have a 4x4 or other high ground clearance vehicle, follow the signs to 'Cunucu Arikok'. The road to 'Cero Arikok' goes to the top of a hill where the airport's VOR station is located.

Bird sign tower The Bubali Bird Sanctuary located just south of the high rise hotels, is a good spot for birdwatchers. Access to the observation tower is across the road from the Dutch windmill.

Tank
On the way to the Alto Vista Chapel there is a paved road on the left leading to a water tank on a hill. The view from there encompasses the entire north end of the island including a good panoramic view of the Palm Beach hotels, the lighthouse, and the golf course.

Internet Access

Many of the resorts provide internet access for their guests at a resonable price.

Wireless access is also available at a variety of locations.

Cash (ATM) Machines

There are several cash machines in Aruba that connect to banks in the United States via the CIRRUS and PLUS networks. The ATM's to look for are: Florins

- CMB (Caribbean Mercantile Bank)

- ARUBA BANK NV

- RBTT Bank Aruba NV

All ATM's have an option for instructions in English and will dispense Florins. Many also have an option to dispense US Dollars.

Florin withdrawals from all of the ATM's that I used resulted in debits from my account at the exchange rates between 1.77 and 1.79. There were no fees or charges imposed by the Aruban banks, however, your home bank may add some fee's.

The cash machines in the Casino's WILL incure extra charges!

The Cirrus handbook states that outside the US, you may need a 4-digit pin code. If your pin code is something other than that, you should check with your bank before you leave.

Maps

Sign Maps of Aruba are available from several sources. None of them are completely accurate. All of them, for example show the road between Santa Cruz and Oranjestad as 7B/7A. If you happen to be in Santa Cruz and are looking for that road, you will find that it is marked 5B on the road signs. Also, none of the maps show the road(s) to the base of Hooiberg where the stairway begins. The best way to get to Hooiberg is to turn right off 4B to the Piedra Plat Protestant Church, then make a right before you enter the church yard and follow the road to the mountain.

The best map is the Berndtson & Berndtson (B&B Map) which can be purchased in Aruba. I got mine from the Samsom Bookstore in Aruba. You can also get them from bookstores in the USA for $9.95.

The best free map is bound in the back of the Aruba Experience book available in your hotel lobby.

The AMEX map from the car rental agencies and the one in the Aruba Nights book only have marginal usability.

Casino Notes

All gaming in the Aruba casinos is done with US currency. The mechanical slots use either US coins or tokens of the same value depending on the casino. Most machines will accept your paper US currency directly. There are nickel and penny slots at all the casinos. There are also a lot of electronic machines that will print a ticket rather than dumping coins. Sports betting is available at many of the casinos.

Do not expect slots payouts like Nevada or New Jersey, the machines in Aruba are very tight!

Table minimums vary depending on the casino.

Airport Notes

If your flight is a direct flight to the United States, you will clear US Immigration and Customs at the airport in Aruba. The procedure (when we departed in early May) was as follows: Security Tag

- Check in with your airline in the US departure building (possible long queue).

- Proceed to the main building and clear Aruban Immigration (turn in the stub of your tourist card).

- Next is x-ray security (possible long queue).

- Next you will pass a collection of shops and snack bars. This is where you can get your duty-free stuff and a last minute snack as there is very little available in the gate area. There are also tables and chairs where you can sit down and complete your US Customs form.

- You must then retrieve the luggage you checked with the airline.

- With your luggage you go through US Immigration and Customs (possible long queue). You may have to submit to a hand inspection of your checked luggage before it is placed on a belt for loading onto the airplane.

- You will then pass through a second x-ray security (possible long queue).

- Lastly, you proceed to your gate and wait for your flight. divider
